The story takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas in NYC and focuses on the effect of a department store Santa Claus who claims to be the real Santa. Originally conceived in the mind of Valentine Davies, who one day looked at the commercialism of Christmas and thought, “What would Santa say if he saw all of this?”. Mr. Davies expressed his thought to some movie friends who then convinced him to elaborate the thought in a screenplay. He did and subsequently wrote the book. The movie, directed by George Seaton, is a timeless story and a heartwarming reminder to care for the child in all of us.
